Red bellied black snake

It is normal to see a snake or two on most bushwalks in summer. In this area, the snakes found do not act aggressively unless provoked. Red belly blacks have attitude, however, and will often 'stand' their ground and it is the walker who must find another route. At least it means that you can often get a good photo of red belly blacks, if you don't mind getting close!

Note the small head in relation to the large and thick body. This one was in excellent health.
