Apsley Gorge Track
The Northern Tablelands of New South Wales Australia has some of the most superb bushwalking country anywhere on earth.
The walking here has unique features of vistas of gorge country, sheer vertical cliffs, waterfalls, and typically 600 to 700 metres altitude difference between the gorge rim and the valley floor below.
These pages will document the gorge rim between Walcha and Armidale. This walk of around 160 km will form part of a longer 450 km walk from Walcha through the environs of Armidale and thence to the coast. This walk along the cliffline from Walcha to Armidale will take fifteen days altogether once the track is surveyed.
We are at the very start of documenting the walk, which involves getting permission from landholders to cross private land, working out the most feasible route, noting the vegetation, taking photographs, documenting the photos and the route as below, and finding sites for camps or huts. Charlie Winter of Walcha has done vital initial survey work, and organises the walks from Walcha to Table Top Hut. David Lawrence of Armidale organises the walks between Table Top Hut and Dangars Falls
It is a long term project, but will eventually give long term benefits to the Walcha and Armidale area.
It should be emphasised, however, that this survey data shown here is for planning and educational purposes only. When the route of the walk is finalised, guided walks will be taken along suitable parts of the route.
Little of the walking documented here, which passes in the main across private property, is available to the general public, who are encouraged instead to contact their local National Parks and Wildlife Office for information about walks in their area, or on the New England Tablelands.
