Gold mine?

This appears to be an exploratory hole dug for minerals.

Gold mine?

A few metres away there was a steep cliff. If it was an exploratory mine, they may have been able to get a much better idea of the mineralisation with less effort by going over the edge on the end of a rope and taking samples.
